MEDICAL CODING
Medical Coding is the conversion of a patient's health reports from a healthcare professional or a doctor , which contains doctors diagnosis, prescription and treatment received into alphanumeric codes. These codes are later billed to healthcare insurance providers to claim insurance for payment purpose. This is known as medical billing process.
For coding purpose, the coders uses a set of unique previously designed codes which includes, ICD, CPT and HCPCS. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of assigned diagnostic codes which are set by World Health Organisation (WHO). These codes contains signs, symptoms, diagnosis, or any other findings on a patient. For instance ICD Code D56.9 denotes thalassemia.
Thalassemia are inherited blood disorders caused by decreased production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. People with thalassemia have fewer healthy red blood cells and less hemoglobin than normal. These conditions can lead to anemia, fatigue, and other complications. There are two types of thalassemia: alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia. Alpha thalassemia is caused by a decrease in the production of alpha globin, a type of hemoglobin. Beta thalassemia is caused by a decrease in the production of beta globin, another type of hemoglobin. Treatment for thalassemia depends on the type and severity of the condition. In some cases, medications, blood transfusions, and other treatments may be necessary.
