MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the conversion of a patient's health information from the doctor's notes, including medical procedures, diagnoses, information about necessary medical equipment, and information about medical services. This data is converted into standard medical alphanumeric codes by a medical coder.
There three sets of codes that medical coders use. These includes ICD, CPT and HCPCS. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases provides a way of classifying diseases, injuries and causes of death. For instance ICD code E75.22 denotes Gaucher diseases.
Gaucher disease is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which is responsible for breaking down a certain type of fat called glucocerebroside. This leads to the accumulation of glucocerebroside in various tissues and organs, resulting in a wide range of symptoms. Symptoms may include an enlarged liver and spleen, anemia, thrombocytopenia, bone abnormalities, fatigue, and an increased risk of infection. Treatment typically involves enzyme replacement therapy, which can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
